Fly with us over the site to understand its location and the proximity to existing low density homes
The site is unsuitable for high-medium density development, it is contaminated, has major stormwater issues, and is needed for cemetery expansion. We need a moratorium on vegetation clearing.
Without community engagement or a public tender process, Council has agreed to sell a parcel of community zoned land beside Cooroy cemetery for a high-medium density housing development. And Council does not appear to have the necessary authority under currently proposed amendments to the Noosa Plan for this. Council have indicated a development plan that would permit around 120 dwellings on around 2Ha of partly wooded hillside.
Residents in the existing neighbourhood understand the need to create ever more housing, but the site has many development constraints. Development on such a scale would threaten the amenity of the neighbourhood including the future of the cemetery. An asbestos contaminated landfill would need to be fully excavated - and site runoff - that already causes local flooding - would increase significantly.
Our first priority is to stop plans to deforest the site.
